The Power Within: Community Members Leading Their Own Development

In the rural village of Jjalamba, Mpigi district, Uganda, a remarkable transformation has started to take place. CorpsAfrica/Uganda, through its Community-Led Development, Asset-Based Community Development, and Human Cantered Design approaches, has empowered the local community to take charge of their development. Together with the community, we have been able to do different integration activities using the available resources within our vicinity that aim at improving livelihoods including health, environment protection, promoting better hygiene practices as well as diversifying incomes. Some of the activities we have engaged in include planting vegetable kitchen gardens, making energy-saving stoves, building plate racks, and constructing latrines. We have also made doughnuts for income, especially among young girls. The beauty in all this is communities have taken the lead.
Through the conversations we have had in the meetings, the residents of the predominantly farming have realized the vast potential within their land. The opportunities for different agricultural enterprises are endless from piggery, poultry, and goat rearing to coffee growing.

With the different groups of youth, women, and men, we are looking forward to starting various income-generating projects using the available resources in the community.

Communities say,

“When we are involved in an activity, we are not only part of it but will ensure to carry it on for a long time” Ms Christine Kiwwede.

The more we wait for saviors, the more we lag. I want to take this opportunity and thank God that someone thought of Jjalamba to send in a volunteer who has given us this knowledge that we can use the available resources to cause our development rather than waiting,” Mr. Ssaka Paul, Local area One leader (LC.1) Jjalamba village.

The power among the community members of Jjalamba village is truly remarkable. Through their dedication, hard work, and the support of CorpsAfrica/Uganda, they have not only embraced agricultural enterprises but have also become pioneers in their development. By seizing opportunities and leveraging their skills and resources, they are on the journey to transform their lives and their community. As the community takes charge of their destiny, they inspire others to do the same, setting a powerful example of the potential that lies within us all.
