My journey as an Exchange Volunteer from CorpsAfrica/Rwanda to CorpsAfrica/Kenya has been an enriching experience filled with learning, cultural exchange, and personal growth. Upon arriving in Kenya, I was eager to immerse myself in this new environment and hold the challenges and opportunities that set ahead.
One of the first steps in my journey was learning Kiswahili, a language widely spoken in Kenya. Over two months, I committed myself to mastering this new language, which not only allowed me to communicate effectively with the local communities but also helped me gain a deeper understanding of their way of life. Alongside language achievement, I had the privilege of experiencing the diverse cultures of various tribes, which broadened my view and deepened my appreciation for Kenya’s culture.
After two months, I embarked on Pre-Service Training (PST), where I had the opportunity to build strong relationships with my fellow local volunteers. This period was crucial as we learned new skills that would be essential in our community work. I particularly enjoyed learning how to make soaps and weave, which were both practical and creative activities that I knew would benefit the communities we would be going to serve.
The next phase of our training involved Community-Based Training (CBT), where we spent two weeks living with host families in a local community. My host family welcomed me warmly, treating me as one of their own. During this time, I felt a deep sense of belonging and connection with the community. Together with the other Volunteers, we facilitated various community activities such as charcoal briquette making, kitchen gardening, baking, and soap making. I had the privilege of leading a soap-making session, which was an amazing experience for both me and the community members. The enthusiasm and willingness of the community to learn and adopt new skills were truly inspiring.
I am filled with gratitude for the experiences and relationships I have built. This exchange has not only equipped me with new skills and knowledge but has also deepened my commitment to community service and cross-cultural understanding.
