Five Months On, A Reflection of My Journey as a Volunteer Teacher

As I sit down to reflect on my journey as a Volunteer teacher with my community school kids, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and pride. Teaching isn’t just a profession; it’s a vocation, a calling to shape the minds and hearts of the future generation. Over the months since deployment, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the growth, challenges, and triumphs of my students, and each experience has left an indelible mark on my journey as a Volunteer.

Triumphs of my students, and each experience has left an indelible mark on my journey as a Volunteer.

From the moment I stepped into the classroom, I knew that building a strong rapport with my students was paramount. So I created a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child feels valued and supported. And I tried to foster a sense of belonging, trust, and respect, laying the foundation for meaningful learning experiences.

Over the months, one of the most rewarding aspects of my teaching journey has been witnessing the transformation in my students’ confidence and abilities. Whether it’s helping Afishetu overcome academic hurdles or watching Rawuda blossom into a confident leader, seeing Jelil’s growth is incredibly gratifying and the entire class enjoying lessons and bonding activities has been refreshing. It reaffirms my belief in the power of education to empower and uplift individuals.

Beyond academic achievement, my goal as a Volunteer teacher is to instill in my students a passion for lifelong learning, empathy for others, and a sense of social responsibility. Education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about developing the whole child and preparing them to become compassionate, informed, and engaged citizens of the world.

As I look ahead to the future, I am filled with optimism and excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead. My teaching journey with my school kids has been both challenging and immensely rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive difference in their lives. Together, we will continue to learn, grow, and inspire each other, one lesson at a time.
