Celebrating Christmas with My Elderly

Christmas is often seen as a time for family gatherings, festive meals, and cheerful celebrations, and it is a holiday that carries deep significance for people of all ages. For the elderly, however, Christmas can be a time filled with mixed emotions. While it is a joyous occasion, it may also highlight feelings of loneliness or loss.

For many elderly individuals, especially those living alone the holiday season can amplify feelings of isolation. The hustle and bustle of family celebrations can leave them feeling disconnected. This is why the youths of Imbale and I decided to spend Christmas with the elderly whom we identified in the Imbale community of Kakamega County. The act of our presence, and offering company was more meaningful than any material gift because these gestures reaffirmed to them that they are still an integral part of my community.

This festive season was very special for me as a CorpsAfrica volunteer and the group of youth because the elderly got the chance to share stories of past Christmases, reminiscing about the special people and events that shaped their lives. Listening to these stories was very essential part of making the elderly feel valued and remembered. For us, it presented an opportunity to learn about their heritage and gain a deeper appreciation for their experiences. I learned that seniors often have a wealth of life experience and have contributed to the lives of others in countless ways.

Through empathy-building conversation, I realized that due to physical limitations because of age, the elderly may not be able to engage in all the activities they once enjoyed. However, this time did not affect us to partake in the holiday spirit. Mr. Benjamin decided to sing one of the best Christmas carols in Luhya although I could not understand it well the song was very interesting. Activities like these uplift our spirits and add a festive atmosphere to our surroundings.

Celebrating Christmas with the elderly in my community was much more than giving gifts or hosting grand celebrations. This activity ensured that the elderly felt loved, valued, and connected during this time when they needed it the most. By spending time with them, creating new bonds, reflecting on shared memories, and expressing gratitude, we made Christmas a meaningful and joyous occasion for elderly individuals in my community. In turn, these gestures not only enrich the lives of our seniors but also remind all of us of the true spirit of Christmas: love, compassion, and connection.
