Adventure of Deployment: My Journey to the Western Side of Kenya

Deployment day as a CorpsAfrica/Kenya Volunteer, what an adventure! At 24 years old I realized I had never set foot on the western side of Kenya. That was about to change. My journey began on Saturday the 28th of September when I travelled from Kisii to Nakuru. The next phase kicked off with a bus ride from Nakuru to Kakamega. We started the journey at 12:40 a.m. on Sunday 30th September arriving in Kakamega around 4:50 a.m. 30th September. I was not alone my fellow Volunteers Fatma and Christine, were by my side. To our surprise and delight we were met with a VIP reception our Program Coordinator Samuel Matiru and our counterpart Dr. Safu picked us up in a sleek Mercedes Benz! This welcome was everything we needed to shake off any fears. After a refreshing shower and breakfast, we were ready to take on the day.

Our first stop was Fatmas’ community. Initially, the anxiety was felt as only a few people turned up, but soon the atmosphere shifted and the gathering was graced by senators’ passing by. Next, we headed to Christine’s community where everything went smoothly. Finally, it was time to visit my community of Shinoyi though the turnout was low due to confusion about the dates we rescheduled for the 30th of October and I am truly looking forward to that.

After meeting with a few community members of Shinoyi I was dropped off at my host family’s home. The warmth of their reception blew me away. They even prepared chicken for me, The family’s hospitality was undeniable and I quickly felt at home. Surrounded by the serene, green landscape, I could not help but feel grateful for this adventure and the chance to serve my community of Shinoyi.

A special thank you goes to my Program Coordinator Samuel Matiru whose kindness and care have made this transition smooth. His leadership and thoughtful nature have already left a lasting impact on us volunteers. I am thankful for him as I eagerly anticipate making a difference in Shinoyi.
