A Season of Joy, Reflection, and Unexpected Discoveries

While visiting different villages during the holiday season I was surprised to learn that one of the churches in Kotur does not celebrate Christmas. Their reason? They believe that Jesus was not born on December 25th. This church alongside Islamic, Adventist, and Jehovah’s Witness communities stands out as a fourth group that chooses not to celebrate Christmas.

Hearing this was surprising and thought-provoking. For many of us, Christmas is a celebration of Christ’s birth and a time of unity and joy. Witnessing how faith is expressed differently within the same community was interesting. In addition, members continue to engage with the community in meaningful ways during the season.

Most of the community believes that the festival season in Kotur village is always a time of warmth, connection, and celebration. On Christmas day, families prepare special meals and share dishes like Chapati, Ugali, and different kinds of meat. Some families also prepare traditional beer. Children eagerly receive new clothes, sweets, and shoes while adults take time to express gratitude for the year’s blessings.

As Christmas fades, the excitement for a new year takes center stage. The families gathered to reflect on the past year and share their hopes for the future. Some celebrated by staying up late, praying, and singing as they awaited midnight. The moment the clock strikes twelve most of the people outside are screaming because of the joy of entering the new year.

Unity and Diversity

Despite the difference in how Christmas is celebrated or not celebrated, the festival season in Kotur highlights the beauty of our diverse community. Whether celebrating in church, at home, or choosing not to celebrate at all the common thread that unites them is the spirit of togetherness and hope for a brighter future.

How it shaped me

Being in Kotur during this holiday season made me realize that belonging does not come from shared traditions alone but it comes from shared humanity. Even when I felt a little out of place at first, I soon understood that differences in belief didn’t mean exclusion. Instead, they offered opportunities to learn and grow. As I step into the new year in this community I feel grateful for the unexpected discoveries and the warm connection I have made.
