A Journey of Service: My CorpsAfrica Experience in Morocco

It was a day that remains vividly in my memory—the day I reached my second home, CorpsAfrica/Maroc, filled with a rush of excitement. The moment I stepped off the plane at Casablanca International Airport, I was filled with a mixture of anticipation and hope. The welcoming smiles of the CorpsAfrica/Maroc staff reassured me that I was exactly where I needed to be.

After a day of travel, I was taken to the charming Hotel Oudaya in Marrakesh, where my pre-service training commenced. This training wasn’t just about understanding the basics; it was a deep dive into the principles of Asset-Based Community Development, Human-Centered Design, and Community-Led Development. Each session sparked new ideas and fueled my passion for cultural exchange and community engagement.

As the swearing-in ceremony approached, my excitement intensified. The community-based practice (CBT) I participated in during my training gave me a taste of the impact we could make, further heightening my eagerness to support community-driven efforts. I woke up early on the day of the ceremony, seeking divine guidance for the path ahead. With a commitment to serving with enthusiasm for ten months in the Al Haouz province, specifically in the village of Tagmoute, Morocco, I felt an overwhelming sense of purpose.

The oath-taking ceremony was emotional and powerful, marking the beginning of our journey as Volunteers. After the ceremony, saying goodbye to my fellow CorpsAfrica/Maroc Volunteers was bittersweet. We had built a camaraderie that would stay with us long after we parted ways. My heart raced with excitement as I anticipated the next chapter in Tagmoute Village.

Upon arriving at my residence in Tagmoute, I instantly felt a strong connection and a true sense of belonging. The community welcomed me with open arms, and I was filled with gratitude for the warmth and hospitality I encountered. The farewell event organized by the community was a culmination of these shared experiences and a celebration of our journey together, solidifying the bond we had formed.

My time as a CorpsAfrica/Rwanda exchange Volunteer in Morocco has been truly life-changing. I’ve learned so much about the strength of community and the power of collaboration. Each interaction, each shared story, and every ounce of shared laughter has deepened my appreciation for the vibrant culture of Morocco. Here’s to the unforgettable memories, and to the journey that continues beyond this experience.

As I embark on this adventure, I carry with me the lessons learned and the friendships forged, ready to contribute to the beautiful tapestry of development and growth within the Tagmoute community. If you’re considering a volunteer opportunity, I can’t recommend CorpsAfrica enough. The experience will change your life and deepen your commitment to making a difference in the world.
