A Heart for Service

My journey with CorpsAfrica/Rwanda began in May when a friend shared the application link for Cohort 6, I explored the qualifications and researched for more information, and after navigating the application process, I received an email on June 29th inviting me to an interview. On the interview day, I felt nervous but was captivated by the engaging conversation with the interview team. Finally, on July 12th, I received the long-awaited news of my selection to join CorpsAfrica/Rwanda as a volunteer trainee in Cohort 6.

On August 11th, I set off for Amakuza Resort to participate in the Pre-Service Training (PST) program. Over the next 45 days, PST introduced me to CorpsAfrica’s approaches, emphasizing Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) and Human-Centered Design (HCD), I also engaged in various activities that equipped me with essential practical skills for my volunteer role as an agent of change in my community. Two weeks before my deployment, I faced challenges during the site selection process, but support from others encouraged me to take on the opportunity. PST concluded with a visit to Akagera National Park as a way to refresh our minds and Liberation Trail which highlighted Rwanda’s transformation through volunteer efforts and fueled my passion for contributing and serving the community through volunteerism.

The Swearing-In Ceremony was a significant milestone, marking my official transition from a trainee to a Corps Africa Volunteer. It became a moment of joy and eagerness, armed with the knowledge gained during the 45 days of PST, also our PST sharpened me into a traditional dancer thanks to the traditional coaches and CorpsAfrica/Rwanda in general for the program. With my newfound knowledge and skills, I was eager to serve my community and facilitate them to respond to their needs. On September 26th, 2024, I headed to my assigned site in Rulindo District, specifically in the Bushoki Sector, Gasiza Cell, and Buhande Village. My anticipation grew as I connected with my host family. After an eventful journey, I arrived at their home in the afternoon, where my host mother, greeted me warmly. Their hospitality made my transition into the community smooth and welcoming.

The past two weeks living with my host family have been incredibly rewarding. My host mother and her family have provided invaluable guidance, helping me integrate into the Buhande community with ease. Their kindness has greatly enriched my experience. During this integration phase, I actively took part in several community activities, including digging with community members, teaching children in Early Childhood Development (ECD) classes, establishing a kitchen garden, participating in group savings initiatives, engaging in community service (Umuganda), I also attended village and cell-level community meetings, which enhanced my understanding of local needs and dynamics.

As I began this transformative journey, I recognized that everyone has the potential to contribute to national development through empowerment and a shift in mindset. CorpsAfrica’s approach assists communities in identifying and leveraging their existing resources, fostering a sense of ownership. Looking back on my experiences, I feel immense gratitude, choosing to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the unknown has proven to be one of the most rewarding decisions of my life. I am excited to apply the principles of Human-Centered Design and Asset-Based Community Development. This journey promises growth, learning, and collaborative efforts to create a better impact for the Rulindo/Bushoki sector. I am incredibly thankful to CorpsAfrica for this wonderful opportunity. I encourage you to stay tuned for updates on my journey in fostering community-led development in Rulindo /Bushoki.

Together, we can explore the unfolding chapters of this remarkable experience as a Catalyst for Community-led development.
