Project Overview

In collaboration with the Kikumini community, CorpsAfrica/Kenya was able to set up a tree and vegetable nursery in Munyuni village with Irene Kihumba as the 2023 Volunteer working on the site. The project seeks to encourage the community to plant and grow trees in a bid to protect the environment, and improve nutrition by making vegetable seedlings available to the community members of Kikumini Location so that they are able to generate income from selling the seedlings. The project was launched successfully in September 2023 upon completion of setting up the tree nursery with planted seedlings and an installed water tank.

Project Highlights

  • Setting up of two nurseries, one for trees and another for vegetables on a 50 by 100 piece of land for the Kikumini Community and installing a water tank to ensure that tree seedlings are watered thoroughly.

  • Philanthropist Dr. Manu Chandaria donated KES 100,000 towards the project cost which ensured the conclusion of the project's implementation.

  • Anticipated impacts from the establishment of the tree nursery include improved nutrition and environment, as well as economic empowerment from income generated through selling seedlings.

  • As per the Project follow-up in February 2024, the tree nursery bed has 15,000 tree seedlings and they have been able to make an income of $200 from selling some tree seedlings.
