The project was designed to address the multifaceted challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Kyuso, which included the lack of essential assistive devices, unreliable income sources, and inadequate nutrition. These challenges had left PWDs largely dependent on caregivers, hampering their productivity and self-reliance while also affecting the overall economic development and prosperity of the area. Kelvin Mutuma, the Volunteer living in this community facilitated the project from ideation to implementation during his one year of service. Ensuring effective collaboration and smooth operations between Walkabout Foundation and the PWDs on the ground.
Project Highlights
Significant economic empowerment by providing Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with an income source through goat farming by purchasing 40 goats, thereby reducing their financial dependence and enhancing their overall financial well-being.
Distribution of 119 wheelchairs by Walkabout Foundation, which greatly improved the mobility and independence of PWDs with mobility challenges, enabling them to participate more independently and actively in daily life.
18 PWD learners started going to school after receiving their required assistive devices.
Through involving the whole community, the project contributed to social inclusion, addressing the stigmatization and burden that PWDs once faced, fostering a more inclusive and supportive community.
