Hosted by Khadija Benayad, a dedicated Volunteer from Group 8, this special episode brings us to the heart of volunteerism. Mostafa Essalai, Training Officer & Field Coordinator, and fellow Volunteer Hajar Mouslim join her. With special guest, Abderrahim Boualy, CorpsAfrica Alumni Network Manager.
Khadija and Hajar shared their personal experiences of volunteering in CorpsAfrica, both the challenges and rewards of working in remote communities. They underline the importance of understanding and respecting local cultures and needs before rolling out development projects so that efforts would be of real use and sustainable.
Mostafa Essalai contributes his arguments to the rigorous training programs meant to enable volunteers to engage in effective community service. He values adaptability and responsiveness to community-specific needs—a virtue quite significant in this dynamic, often very challenging environment.
Abderrahim Boualy discusses the long-term impacts of volunteer work on the communities and volunteers themselves. He says that in this factor, it is possible to project further away where sustainable development occurs within a community; by extension, those changes become strong inside the community for growth and resilience to disaster risks, a factor that fosters personal development and a sense of fulfillment along with a desire to continue giving.
Through all this, volunteers share bits about their experiences when working—showing the good times, fun stories, and occasionally rough ones. Ranging from stories about living in tents and playing local sports to overcoming obstacles and enjoying small victories, it proves that life as a volunteer can be very colorful.
The podcast brings out the need to understand and integrate into the communities one serves, to ensure that the initiatives conducted are culturally sensitive and truly beneficial. In responding to varied challenges affecting distinct communities—especially immediately after such disasters as earthquakes—flexibility and adaptability are important. This is much in line with sustainable projects, like the Moroccan bathroom (Hammam) project by Khadija and Hajar, highlighting basic needs but also environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions.
This podcast episode should be of interest to everyone involved in humanitarian work, sustainable development, and the transformative power of volunteerism. It’s an aggie-daggie mix of personal experiences and professional insights with practical advice for the aspiring volunteer or community worker. Do not miss this heartwarming, informative discussion.
