International Volunteer Day

December 5, 2024

CorpsAfrica celebrated 2024 International Volunteer Day by hosting a reception in Washington, DC on December 5th. International Volunteer Day, is an international observance mandated by the United Nations General Assembly where volunteers are acknowledged and the spirit of volunteerism is promoted at the local, national, and international levels. International Volunteer Day celebrated the importance of people-led solutions to common challenges around the globe.

The CorpsAfrica reception, which included a silent auction of handmade African crafts and gifts, was well attended by local business leaders, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, and members of the NGO and diplomatic communities, including Her Excellency Justice Esme Jynet Chombo, Ambassador of the Republic of Malawi to the United States.

In her remarks to attendees, CorpsAfrica CEO Liz Fanning expressed heartfelt appreciation for all of the tremendous work of CorpsAfrica Volunteers and for the donors who support the organization’s impact across ten countries. Samora Otieno, Chief Program Officer for CorpsAfrica also offered remarks and highlighted some of the various Volunteer-led projects that are transforming communities across the Continent.

The reception was also attended by members of the CorpsAfrica Board of Directors, including Kerry McNamara, outgoing board Chair and Special Advisor for the OCP Group, a founding funder of CorpsAfrica. Both Fanning and the incoming Board Chair Stéphane Le Bouder recognized McNamara’s years of dedication and service to CorpsAfrica.

Support Our Work

CorpsAfrica addresses two of Africa’s most difficult challenges: creating opportunities for youth and helping rural communities overcome extreme poverty and build resilience. We recruit motivated volunteers to live and work in remote, low-income areas in their own countries. They collaborate with the community to design and implement small-scale projects that address their top priorities and by doing so gain the skills and experience that lay the foundation for personal and professional success.

CorpsAfrica trusts youth and rural communities to help each other.
