A Christmas in Rural Meru: Reflections from the Banana Plantations

What does Christmas feel like when the world slows down?

As 2024 winds down, I find myself on a quiet day in rural Meru, surrounded by lush banana plantations and the gentle flow of a stream. The weather is calm, with a soft breeze rustling the leaves, adding to the peaceful ambiance of the morning. The sun rises from the Nyambene and Charuru hills, casting a warm, golden light over the landscape and slowly bringing the day to life. It’s the Christmas season, but here, it feels different; simpler, slower, yet deeply meaningful.

I’m holding a piece of sugarcane, freshly harvested from a nearby farm, and reflecting on the journey I’ve had as a CorpsAfrica Volunteer. The small stream provides life to the community; water for their farms and homes and reminds me of the work I do here to help build sustainable, resilient communities.

Today is my maintenance day, a moment to tend to the small things that keep life running smoothly. It’s a time to pause and appreciate this place’s beauty, its people’s generosity, and the simple, powerful ways in which we are all connected.

This Christmas, I’m not giving presents wrapped in paper but offering my time, support, and gratitude. In Meru, the spirit of the season is in the land, the stream, and the people who make this place feel like home. Merry Christmas from the heart of Meru!
