Kickstarting Yatoi’s Transformation: A Pathway of Hope and Community Empowerment

Yatoi sublocation in Baringo County has embarked on a path to sustainable development through a successful Community Asset Mapping exercise. Facilitated by CorpsAfrica/Kenya, the event brought together 161 community members from Kapsoricho, Sirinyo “C,” and Kiwanja Ndege villages to identify their assets, challenges, and opportunities.

Guided by the Community-Led Development (CLD) model, the process empowered residents to articulate their needs, propose solutions, and envision a better future. Through collaborative discussions, participants identified key challenges such as water piping, public toilets, road infrastructure, unemployment, and access to health and education facilities. Despite these hurdles, they also highlighted their strengths, including available land, labour, and skilled individuals eager to contribute.

Proposed solutions reflected a mix of self-reliance and collaboration. For example, residents of Kiwanja Ndege pledged to provide labour for water piping and road clearing while seeking external support for materials. Sirinyo “C” villagers identified land for new schools and health facilities, signalling readiness to work with partners for funding and technical expertise.

To ensure progress, the community elected subcommittee leaders to spearhead initiatives and engage stakeholders. These leaders will play a crucial role in fostering collective action and overseeing implementation.

This mapping exercise is more than a milestone—it’s the beginning of a transformation journey for Yatoi. With a shared vision and commitment, the community is set to implement sustainable solutions and unlock its full potential. Together with CorpsAfrica and other partners, Yatoi is charting a brighter, more resilient future.
