In anticipation of International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2024, Volunteer organizations from across Ghana came together early to celebrate, uniting their efforts and amplifying their shared commitment to making a difference. The event was held at Abbey Korpe D/A Basic School in Dawhenya, on November 4th, 2024. Organized by KOICA in collaboration with multiple volunteer agencies, including CorpsAfrica/Ghana, JICA, Peace Corps, UNV, France Volontaires, and University of Ghana volunteers, the event highlighted the transformative impact of volunteerism on community development and promoted its significance within Ghana.
The celebration began with an energetic performance by the school’s dance group, who welcomed guests with traditional music and dance, creating an atmosphere of unity and enthusiasm. Representatives from each participating organization then took to the stage, delivering motivational speeches that underscored the importance of volunteerism. KOICA’s Country Director, Mr. Dong Hyun Lee, emphasized how volunteer efforts advance
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by supporting initiatives in education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability.
Following the speeches, volunteers moved into classrooms to engage directly with the students, focusing on health and hygiene education. Volunteers from each agency led interactive sessions covering essential topics like menstrual hygiene, dental care, and proper handwashing techniques. These sessions aimed to equip students with practical skills to foster a healthier learning environment.
A highlight of the day was KOICA’s special presentation of educational supplies to Abbey Korpe D/A Basic School as a gesture of support for their commitment to education. The students and staff expressed heartfelt gratitude, acknowledging the impact of these resources on their learning experience.
As the event drew to a close, everyone gathered to share a meal, strengthening bonds through cultural exchange and mutual appreciation. The day ended on a high note with another captivating dance by the school’s dance group, leaving participants in high spirits and with a sense of accomplishment.
This year’s early International Volunteer Day celebration in Dawhenya was a resounding success, demonstrating the power of collaboration among volunteer organizations. Beyond celebrating volunteers’ contributions, the event underscored the critical role of health education in sustainable community development. Together, these organizations and volunteers are paving the way for a brighter future for communities across Ghana, inspiring
others to join in the spirit of volunteerism.
