Through a collaborative, community-led process using the Human-Centered Design approach and the Innovator’s Compass, the people of Goviofe Agordome identified the construction of a multi-purpose community center as a priority. The need for a decent public gathering space emerged from discussions and a community asset mapping exercise, where various ideas were considered. Ultimately, the community center was deemed the most practical and impactful project for fostering social cohesion, education, health awareness, and economic growth.
This community center will serve as a hub for stakeholder engagements, social activities such as funerals and festivals, an educational space for students, and a venue for health education and outreach. It will also generate revenue, supporting future community projects. Previously, the community only had a single shed that lacked adequate space and protection from weather elements, often forcing people to leave during meetings or events due to rain or intense sunlight.
Initially, the community planned to construct two sheds with pillars to increase capacity for social events and community meetings. However, inflation caused a significant rise in material costs, leading to the decision to build one large structure instead. Despite this challenge, the project remained a priority for the community, and members contributed cash, materials, and labor to ensure its success.
The project was carried out with the full participation of the community project committee, elders, and local residents, all of whom played a role in its identification, design, and implementation. Their ongoing contributions and ideas will ensure the sustainability and long-term benefits of the center.
