Standing with an Army: “From Total Strangers to Friends for Life”

As I stepped out of the towering beautiful building with my heavy luggage and muffled my footsteps into the car and took my seat. In the car, I was sandwiched between a boy and a girl. As the vehicle was steadily moving us from the city to our permanent sites we exchanged polite smiles, which soon led to an almost sacred silence. As we shared silence instead of stories, we both enjoyed the same obscure hobby of music. Everyone found themselves with ears plugged with headphones as the engine hummed softly beneath us. As we drove on, we passed through quaint towns and vast fields. We stopped at a roadside diner, where the clinking of cutlery and the sizzle of cooking filled the air momentarily, breaking the silence. As the journey drew to a close, we then arrived at our sites and I don’t even remember giving this girl a hug and a goodbye.

Life is fascinating with unexpected connections and friendships that blossom from the most unlikely encounters. First night in a new environment proved a challenge for both of us. We had the privilege of experiencing persistent rodents that kept creeping on us firsthand. Our initial real conversation was fueled by some unpleasant encounters and the next thing we exchanged stories and shared laughter over small anecdotes, something magical started to happen. The barriers of unfamiliarity began to dissolve, replaced by a growing sense of camaraderie and understanding. In the days that followed, we embarked on adventures together, exploring hidden corners of our city, trying new cuisines, and discovering shared passions. With each outing, our connection deepened, fueled by mutual interests and a genuine curiosity to learn more about each other’s lives. What struck me most during this journey from strangers to friends was the openness and vulnerability that gradually unfolded between us and this bred true friendship.

True friendship also means practical support. Memory lent me a hand with projects as well as simply being there to share a meal after a long day, she has always been there for me in tangible ways. I remember there have been moments in my life when I’ve felt overwhelmed and lost. During those times, Memory has been my rock. I recall a particularly unforgettable GBV campaign where our campaign materials such as T-shirts nearly didn’t get delivered and there was also a technical glitch with the sound system that was supposed to be used to disseminate messages on GBV. You can imagine how every community member arrived with excitement at the venue and yet things are falling apart. At the time I did not want to create a moment of despair and having a strong support system made a difference. The emotional support Memory provided was invaluable. She didn’t just offer words of comfort; she was there, physically present, sitting with me in silence when words failed. This kind of support, I realized, is what true friendship is all about; being there for each other, no matter what.

The impact of true friendship on mental health cannot be overstated. With Memory, I’ve found a confidant who helps me navigate my anxieties and fears. We’ve spent countless hours laughing and talking through our problems, offering perspectives that help each other see the bigger picture. These conversations have often been a source of relief and clarity, helping me manage stress and feel more grounded. Friendships are more than just social connections; they are vital support systems that contribute significantly to our emotional, mental, and practical well-being. Today, I am grateful for the serendipitous encounter that brought us together. My once-stranger, now friend, has become a cherished companion on life’s journey, someone with whom I’ve created memories, weathered challenges, and celebrated victories.
