Throughout my service, one important element has continually shaped my experience as a Volunteer in my community: the sense of togetherness of the community. In reflecting on my journey, I am struck by the bonds I have made with the members of my community.
The essence of kindness and mutual support fills every aspect of community life. Witnessing hundreds of individuals pause their daily routines to mourn with those who have lost loved ones, witnessing collective efforts to support disadvantaged members, and observing simple acts of neighborly generosity like sharing salt or looking after each other’s children shows the profound sense of togetherness that defines rural communities—a unity rarely found in urban settings.
This spirit of togetherness and generosity has undoubtedly eased my transition and made my experience much better. From offering transportation during my work-related walks to their warm hospitality during one-on-one visits, from their active participation in community initiatives to their unwavering willingness to extend a helping hand, every facet of my service—be it attending meetings, executing projects, or simply navigating daily life—has been enriched by the togetherness of my community.
The bonds I have cultivated, particularly with my host family, resonate deeply. The transformation from strangers to family depicts the power of genuine connection. Whether receiving check-in calls during my travels, ensuring I’ve had a meal, offering medication during illness, or providing invaluable advice, the kindness extended by my host mother and countless others has been a cornerstone of my journey.
My counterpart’s steadfast support in facilitating community meetings, willingness to assist with tasks, and guidance in navigating the community have helped me progress in ways I could not have achieved alone. The warmth and cooperation of students and teachers have transformed my teaching experience, despite my initial lack of a teaching background. The open doors, fresh produce offerings, warm greetings, and collective commitment to community engagement have consistently eased the challenges of my service.
Upon joining CorpsAfrica, the focus on professional growth was important. Yet, amidst the professional development, the profound personal transformations I have gotten from community immersion became equally important. Through making connections with individuals who were once strangers, observing and participating in communal support systems, and experiencing community life firsthand, I have undergone a profound evolution—one that extends far beyond professional realms and deeply enriches my character.
