In the heart of my community, where development faces unique challenges, lies a source of unwavering commitment and determination: “Women”. Their active involvement in community meetings concerning the development of Hamunyepo village serves as the driving force behind positive change. In this blog, we’ll explore the invaluable role women have played and continue to play in shaping the future of their community through their dedicated attendance and engagement in these vital engagements.
Community meetings are the bedrock of community-led development initiatives as they serve as a platform for dialogue, planning, and decision-making. From the very first meeting held in my community, which was an introductory meeting, I vividly remember the majority of women in attendance and their welcoming faces, eager to listen to what the first volunteer in their community had to say. Women, often overlooked but integral members of these communities are increasingly taking the stage through consistent attendance and active participation in these gatherings. Their presence not only amplifies diverse voices but also brings unique perspectives and insights crucial for holistic development.
Despite the numerous barriers such as traditional gender roles and limited access to resources, women are breaking societal norms and carving out spaces for themselves. One interesting fact about my site is that most families depend on fishing as an economic activity and alcohol brewing comes secondary. With most men dominating the fishing industry, most women fall into the alcohol brewing business, a business that has earned most women financial independence and the ability to source necessities for their families; interestingly, it has been noted that families where women are into the brewing business, there have been no cases of physical violence compared to families that rely on fishing as a main source of income as their significant others are supported by the women’s business.
Beyond merely attending meetings, women are driving tangible change in my community. During my consultations with the community for possible project ideas; women were able to voice out their concerns, advocating for the needs of children, and the youth and pledging to take part in whatever project the community decides. In the implementation of CorpsAfrica Sector-specific initiatives, specifically tree planting and the Gender-based violence campaign, the majority of the women were in attendance and contributed to these activities.
Despite the significant contributions women make in my community, they continue to face challenges such as limited access to education, cultural barriers, and lack of representation in decision-making processes. However, their resilience and determination to overcome these obstacles serve as a powerful testament to their unwavering commitment to community development. Therefore, as we continue to champion gender equality and inclusivity, let us recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of rural women in shaping a brighter future for all.
